The Town of Lake Cowichan is located 31 kilometres west of Duncan on Vancouver Island. This quaint Vancouver Island community is situated on Cowichan Lake with the Cowichan River flowing through the centre of town. The Town of Lake Cowichan is located on the shores of Cowichan Lake, one of the largest bodies of fresh water on Vancouver Island. Cowichan Lake is known by its native inhabitants as "Kaatza" or "Big Lake," as it is more than 30 kilometres long. Founded Aug 19, 1944, as the Village of Lake Cowichan with 660 residents, it is today a town of about 3,000 people, with another 3,500 people living in the surrounding region. The Cowichan Lake region includes the villages of Youbou, Caycuse, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake, and The Town of Lake Cowichan.
